Naval Architect Role at Shipyard

 September 07, 2018

Naval Architect or often called naval engineering is a professional engineer who studied the branch of vehicle engineering. Naval architect studied various thing starting with the design, construction and repair of the vessel, structures of the vessel, as well as maintenance and the operation of the vessel. They learn the application of the mechanical elements, electrical elements, software, and even safety in the engineering design process.

In most cases, a naval architect was given a role to design the vessel and doing the calculation. However, the options that naval architect has covers design, construction and repair, consultancy, research and development, education and training, surveyor, even marketing and sales. The knowledge that a naval architect has can help them to understand the structures as well as the overall picture of a vessel. From all of those options, a naval architect can choose their specialization to be experts in one of the fields available.

Ratson shipbuilding also uses the support of naval architect from the best university in town. They help to design the vessel, making the calculation for the stability and other calculation, as well as making the drawing to be approved by the classification. More than that, the naval architect also helps to supervise the building process of the vessel to ensure that the vessel is built exactly like what it is designed. Most of the time, making the drawing to get the class approval is the one which takes so many time besides the building process itself. However, the most critical job is in the accuracy of the calculation which includes hydrostatics calculation, hydrodynamics calculation, structures, and flotation and stability calculation. This will determine the safety of the vessel that it will perform as what it is designed for.

Despite the specialization of the roles of the job, a naval architect could also specialize themselves in the type of the vessel. There are many types of the vessel that they can choose to learn deeper which are:
1. Merchants Ship: Bulk carrier, general cargo, container vessel, and oil & gas tanker
2. Passenger vessel: Ferry and cruise
3. Warship: Landing craft tank, frigates, destroyer, amphibious ships, and aircraft carriers
4. Submarines and underwater vehicles
5. Ice Class vessel
6. High-Speed vessel: Hydrofoil craft, hover-craft, and other multi-hull vessels
7. Workboats: Fishing boat, tugboat, barges, pilot vessel, rescue vessel, and supply vessel
8. Luxury vessel: Yacht, recreational watercraft, and power boats
9. offshore platform and subsea developments

Naval architects can find and nurture their career so well. There are several fields which they can aim to work at to nurture their career. Most of them working at shipowner, shipyards, consultancies and design companies, classification societies, regulatory, even government and equipment manufacturers. All of these companies will need the support of a naval architect to boost their performance to give value to the society and their clients.
