Landing Craft Tank General Arrangement

 September 12, 2018

Every vessel begins with a general arrangement. General arrangement often abbreviated to GA. GA is a drawing that shows the overall composition of the building plan. It can be a building like a hotel, apartment, even car, vessel, and many other. GA includes details of the building plan, the location of every object, the measurement, and other details. Usually, GA's also include notation and symbols following the standards of the company. Furthermore, GA can also cover all the drawings requirement such as structure, construction drawing, technical drawing, assembly drawing, and any necessary drawing.

A General arrangement is talking about the design. In the maritime world, general arrangement is highly used for the selling and buying activity. GA will help buyer and seller in communicating the design of the vessel, the capacity of the vessel, and any other information needed to help the buyer understand about the details of the vessel. Therefore, it is important to have a general arrangement of the vessel that you are planning to sell or buy so that you could learn about the actual vessel before you inspect the vessel.

In case of a new building project, shipyard usually provides what so-called preliminary general arrangement which acts as the temporary design or draft that later on will be finalized. When there is an inquiry from the buyer asking for a newly built vessel, the shipyard will come out with their preliminary general arrangement which made from the information on the buyer's inquiry. This is a positive point that Ratson can give to its buyer because Ratson sees this preliminary GA as their investment which allows any party can get their preliminary GA for free with any revision needed. Afterward, if the buyer is interested to buy and committed to sign the contract, Ratson will give the preliminary GA to their naval architect to help calculate the stability, speed, etc and make several adjustments to the design.

The general arrangement will need to be approved by the classification used to build the vessel. There are 2 types of classification which are the local class and international class, the uses of the classification will be defined from the sailing area of the vessel, as well as the request of the buyer. Both classes have their own rules and disciplines. Every naval architect needs to submit all the required drawing and do the revision as many time as it takes to get the approval of the classification. Once the drawing is approved, the general arrangement will be used by the building department to start the building process.
